Tommy Hanson’s pitching helps Atlanta Braves overpower San Diego Padres, 4-3 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ starter, Tommy Hanson had an outstanding day as he threw six economical innings with an ERA of 2.82 in the Braves’ 4-3 victory against the San Diego Padres at Turner Field, Atlanta on June 1.
The Braves added two runs during first inning to get an initial 2-0 lead. Brian McCann singled to left-field, Martin Prado posted one run and Chipper Jones moved to second base. The second run was taken by Jones on the drive of Freddie Freeman towards centre-field.
On the other side, the Padres contributed two runs in the second inning to tie the game 2-2. Kyle Phillips hit a solo homer (395 feet) to right-field and Chris Denorfia scored a second run of the inning. The Braves went ahead 3-2 when Freeman doubled to
left-field and McCann scored a single run.
During fourth and fifth inning, the pitchers were on top as they permitted no run to any batter. Hanson gave two runs on three hits including two earned runs. He was able to strike-out four batters and allowed two walks on 96 pitches. Hanson commented on
the playing conditions and said, “It was really hot out there. But this is my third year pitching here. I'm used to it. You know it's going to be hot.”
Sixth inning went in favour of the Braves as they extended their lead 4-2 when Prado struck a one-run homer (395 feet) towards left-field. He said, “I couldn't go home like that. When I don't feel good, I go in there and try to fix it. Today, I felt a lot
better. I got a couple of pitches to hit and I put the ball in play.”
The Padres were able to cut their deficit 4-3 in the seventh inning by posting one run. Jorge Cantu hit a sacrifice fly off right-field and Denorfia added one run on the Padres’ score-card. No score was contributed from any batter in the eighth and ninth
inning of the game.
Clayton Richard was expensive throughout his four inning pitches as he gave three runs on eight hits including three earned runs and one strike-out. He permitted four walks on his 97 pitches. Pat Neshek allowed one run in just one inning pitched.
