Tommy Hunter helps Baltimore Orioles edge Minnesota Twins 2-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles salvaged some of their pride as they edged the Minnesota Twins 2-1 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday, July 18 in third game of their four match series.
For the Orioles, Adam Jones homered to left in the first to give his side a crucial 2-0 lead. Josh Willingham hit a solo home-run in the fourth but he could not stop Baltimore from earning a well deserved win.
"We needed this win badly, just as a psyche," said Jones, in a post game interview. "We know we can play good baseball, and we haven't been. It's a testament to always grinding. That's what you have to do."
After losing to Twins in the first two games, the Orioles finally came up with the right formula to keep the series alive. Orioles’ win on Wednesday also helped them maintain second place on the American League East Division standings.
However, Manager Buck Showalter, who was very pleased with Orioles results from the first half, has looked a bit worried after the All Star Break.
"It's no secret that good defense follows around people who throw strikes," Showalter said.
The Orioles have lost more often than not over the last week and it will be interesting to see if they can bring some kind of consistency in their game play to grab one of the two wild card spots.
Credit must be given to Tommy Hunter for the way he handled difficult situations on Wednesday evening. The Orioles’ starting pitcher showed great control over his fastballs. Allowing just six hits and a run in seven plus innings, he managed to put control
of the game in the hands of the Orioles.
"Hopefully we've got to the top of the hill and we're on that downward slope. It's got to get better at some point," Hunter said.
Francisco Liriano continued to struggle on the mound as he took his ninth loss of the season. The Twins’ starting pitcher has looked completely out of sorts since the start of the season. His Wednesday’s outing ended in another disappointment after he gave
up four hits and two runs in a low scoring game.
