Tommy Hunter slashes Los Angeles Angels 3-8 as Baltimore Orioles wage on with victory
Tommy Hunter rose to the top on Friday, September 16 when he delivered seven scoreless innings as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 at Oriole Park in Camden Yards.
The former Texas Rangers starter brought home his fourth win of the season in style as his team-mates pounced on the Angels’ Dan Harren with seven runs.
Hunter finished the day with seven hits and two balls. He struck-out five hitters while lowering his earned runs average to 4.81. Haren, who is currently 15-9, moved to his loss in five innings as the Angels’ hurler allowed seven runs off seven hits and
two balls. His earned runs average climbed to 3.24 and his bid for the 16th victory in the season landed him on the ninth loss.
The O’s kicked off their scoring marathon in the bottom third through Nolan Reimold. The first baseman got the orders to clear home plate when second baseman Robert Andino smashed a single to left-field.
Aldino later scored in the same inning when J. J. Hardy pulled a forced out. Haren was to blame for the run as he had earlier pitched a wild ball, leading Aldino to third base.
2-0 up, the Angels looked strong but their offensive line-up was not nearly as good as Hunter on Friday. The former Texas star was intending to tie the Angels down, as he did so successfully. Mark Reynolds produced the third run for the O’s in the bottom
fifth, when he smashed a homer to left.
Hardy then went into action again as the shortstop produced a double in the same inning to lead Aldino and centre-fielder, Matt Angle, home for two additional runs.
The O’s were up 5-0 and they were not done yet. Chris Davis began a scoring bid in the bottom sixth with a single against Harden. He moved to third when Reynolds came in to smash a double to the left. With the two men on the far end of the bases, Haren got
replaced with Tyler Chatwood. The moved proved expensive for Haren as Davis scored the sixth run when the reliever delivered a wild pitch to Reimold.
Reynolds eventually brought in the seventh when Reimold homered to left-field in the same inning.
The Angels were now 0-8 down. Needing a resurgent inning, their bid got some consideration in the ninth, against reliever Kevin Gregg. Hank Conger smashed a homer against the ball thrower to lead Efren Navarro home with two important runs.
The score was now 8-2 and the odds looked too steep for the Angels. The club however brought in the third when Andrew Romnie ran home through an Alexi Amarista double.
The score was 8-3 and the Angels were looking at a miracle. That however was not going to happen on Friday as Gregg managed to strike Mike Trout out for the game victory.
O’s manager Buck Showalter was delighted with the game and he took great pride in his players who delivered the important win of the day.
The Angels were, on the other hand, unhappy with the result as they were not able to cut the lead placed by the American League West leaders, Texas Rangers. They still are three wins behind.
