Tommy Hunter’s pitching helps Baltimore Orioles defeat Oakland Athletics 6-2 - MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles’ starter, Tommy Hunter had a shiny day with his pitching as he gave up just two earned runs and one walk with an ERA of 4.28 in the Orioles’ 6-2 win against the Oakland Athletics at O.co Coliseum, Oakland on August 15.
During first inning, the batters were outshined by the pitchers and the score-board remained empty. Orioles’ batters were grounded out to different field positions without providing a solid start to their team. Similarly, the Athletics were score-less at
the bottom of first inning as Jemile Weeks singled to centre-field but Coco Crisp lined out to third base and at short-stop position, Hideki Matsui grounded out.
Orioles got their first run during second inning while Athletics went ahead 2-1 by adding two runs at the bottom of second inning. Matt Wieters hit a solo homer (428 feet) towards centre-field to score first run for the Orioles. On the other side, Josh Willingham
added a tie run when David DeJesus drove a double-run shot to deep right-centre.
The second run for the Athletics was taken by DeJesus when Cliff Pennington hit a single-run drive to left-field and Brandon Allen moved towards second base to end the second inning. The batters did not overcome the throws of pitchers from third to sixth
inning of the game as they struggled with their shots.
At the bottom of fourth inning, Allen singled off centre-field whereas at left-field DeJesus flied out and Cliff Pennington fouled out to third base without giving some runs to the Athletics. During seventh inning, Orioles’ batters exploded four runs to
get past the Athletics with 5-2 lead.
Hunter surrendered 10 hits and two runs in his six innings pitched. He had just three strike-outs on his 113 pitches. Hunter said, “The cutter saved me again. It is something that's been a big factor in games for the last couple of years, so why not use
it.”
Robert Andino doubled to deep centre-field while Adam Jones and Vladimir Guerrero scored two runs for Orioles. The third and fourth runs were taken by Wieters and Andino when Josh Bell hit a single-run drive to centre-field. Then, at the top of ninth inning,
Mark Reynolds hit a solo homer (405 feet) towards left-centre to give Orioles a 6-2 lead.
Consequently, Orioles led off the three-game series 1-0 against Athletics at Oakland.
