Tommy Robredo crushes Joao Souza to enter quarters – Skistar Swedish Open 2012
The former world number five, Tommy Robredo, crippled the Brazilian challenger, Joao Souza, with a breadstick at the Skistar Swedish Open 2012 on Wednesday. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the 24-year-old to secure a spot in the final eight at
this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Bastad.
The Spanish veteran brought his experience into handy and overpowered the world number 124 in one hour and 10 minutes. Battling each other for the second time, Robredo not only avenged his loss at the BCR Open in Bucharest last year but also levelled the
FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-1 against the Brazilian.
Robredo made a strong entry at this outdoor clay court event and after drawing the first blood in the third game, he jumped to a 3-1 lead. Despite failing to save the lone breakpoint he encountered in the sixth game, the Spaniard conquered the last three
games in a row and bagged the opener with a 6-3 win.
Currently ranked 199th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo perfected his ways in the second set and held his opening serve with poise. After Souza held his serve in the second game, the veteran unleashed his skills and
stroke out the following five games in a row, eventually pulling out the set with a breadstick.
Robredo seems to re-kindle his old spark in this battle. He fired seven aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to his rival’s 57 per cent. He also tremendously marked 23 out of 28 points on it and cashed in all five break
chances to pocket the match.
Robredo will square off against the current world number five, David Ferrer, who is also the top seed at this tournament. Ferrer tumbled Italy’s Simone Bolelli in straight sets to advance at this tournament.
The fourth seed, Jarkko Nieminen, faced a bitter reality later that day. He was crashed out by the Czech contestant, Jan Hajek, with a breadstick in one hour and 28 minutes.
