Tommy Robredo defeated Donald Young in the third round at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open
Spaniard Tommy Robredo, 28th in the world, ousted Donald Young of America in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 in the third round of BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, California. It took 1 hour and 8 minutes for the Spaniard to
ensure his attendance at the fourth round.
The Spaniard has featured in 5 main draw ATP tour matches this year. He kicked off the year by putting in his appearance at the Australian Open where he reached to the fourth round by winning against Somdev Devvarman, Mardy Fish
and Sergiy Stakhovsky before losing to defending champion Roger Federer. In his latest appearance at Buenos Aires he defeated David Nalbandian to get into the semi-finals of 2011 Copa Claro, eventually losing to Nicolas Almagro.
On the other hand, Donald Young ranked 143 in the world did not kick off the year so well, he lost to Blaz Kavcic in the third round at Delray Beach, FL, U.S.A. He again did not make it past the first round at the Australian Open
losing to Marin Cilic.
The pair’s first meeting came two years back at the U.S Open when Robredo outplayed Young in four sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 securing a 1-0 lead in the career head-to-head.
Given their second meeting on tour both players looked relatively in form, with the American landing in 65 per cent of his first serve and the Spaniard managing a better 75 per cent. The 28-year-old Spaniard managed to convert
83 per cent of his correct first serves into points for himself. His opponent managed a meager 46 per cent and the difference proved to be critical in deciding the consequences of the set. Spaniard capitalized on his first serves points only, and that handed
him the set 6-0
In the second set, Spaniard faced opposition from the American as he created 8 opportunities to break and converted 6 out of them. However, converting serves into points was not American’s forte once again as he only managed to
convert a meager 57 percent than his opponent’s 81 per cent.
Later, Spaniard put his experience on tour to good use and clinched a 6-4 win which improved his year-to-date win/loss record to 14-4.
25th seeded Robredo moves on ahead to face 21st seeded Sam Querrey of America in the fourth round of BNP Paribas open. This will be the 2nd meeting between these two players. Robredo leads Querrey 1-0 in the head-to-head record.
In their last meeting, Robredo turned up successful at Australian Open wrapping up a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1 against him.
