Tommy Robredo halts Fabio Fognini in the final showdown – Vegeta
Croatia Open 2013
Former world number five, Tommy Robredo, crushed the Italian star, Fabio Fognini, with a bagel at the Vegeta Croatia Open 2013 on Sunday. He jolted down a 6-0, 6-3 success over the third seed to grab his second title of the season
at this ATP World Tour 250 series event being held in Umag, Croatia.
Seeded fifth in this event, Robredo barely sweated in the opening sweat and eventually stole the show. As a result, he pocketed €74,000 in prize money and earned 250 ATP ranking points. The pair was meeting each other for the fifth
time and with this triumph, the Spaniard improved to 4-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 head series against Fognini.
"I'm more than happy," said the Spanish veteran in the trophy ceremony. "I've been a professional for nearly 15 years and this is my 12th title, so there have not been many times with trophies. I love the emotion. Before the match,
I was talking to my coach and I was saying, 'It's lovely to be waiting to play a final and you are nervous.' Money can't buy this feeling and I'm lucky to be part of this sport and lucky to have the chance to feel these feelings. I enjoy it and I know how
to handle it."
Robredo thundered into this battle. He unleashed barrage of powerful forehands and wiped out the opening six games, subsequently sealing the opener with a bagel.
The 31-year-old lost his opening serve in the following set. He managed to snatch his break back but went 1-2 down again. However, Robredo stayed focused and not only recovered at 2-2 but got the breakthrough in the eighth game.
As a result, he sealed the deal with a 6-3 win.
The Spaniard started this season outside Top 100 but after grabbing this title, he climbed to number 23 in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings. He improved to 28-15 win-loss record this season after winning this 62-minute
marathon.
Fognini on the other hand was in awesome run of form. He was standing on a 13-match winning streak after lifting his first two career titles at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart and at the bet at home Open German Tennis Championships
in Hamburg.
