Tommy Robredo outshines Facundo Arguello to enter semis – Copa Sevilla 2012
Seeded sixth in this tournament, Tommy Robredo overpowered the Argentinean challenger, Facundo Arguello, at the Copa Sevilla 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Seville, Spain. He recorded a 7-6(4), 2-6,
1-0 retirement victory against the 20-year-old to secure a place in the semi-finals on Thursday.
The former world number five, Robredo was leading 1-0 in the final set when the Argentine was forced to retire. As a result, the Spaniard booked a spot in the final four at this outdoor clay court event taking place from 8th to 15th
September.
Robredo thundered into the Real Club de Tenis Betis. He drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Apart from losing his edge in the eighth game, the Spaniard stayed in contention and took the set to a tie-breaker. He leaped to a
5-1 lead in it before closing out the opener with a 7-6(4) win.
The world number 212 made a fitting reply in the following set. He broke the Argentinean’s serve twice and jumped to a 5-1 lead. The Argentine then plucked hi serve once again and pulled out the equaliser with a 6-2 score line. He bagged his entire serves
without facing any breakpoint and cashed in both break chances to get back in game.
Currently ranked 133rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo re-focused in the final set. He kept his serve to love in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Spaniard was on verge of breaking Arguello’s serve in
the second game and got triple breakpoints. However, the Argentine suffered an injury and was forced to retire from the match.
The Spanish icon will face off his fifth seeded compatriot, Inigo Cervantes, who crushed Ukraine’s Oleksandr Nedovyesov with a breadstick to set up this meeting.
The second seed, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, will accompany Robredo in the semi-finals. He plucked his entire serves without facing any barrier and capitalised on three out of eight break chances to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The seed fired seven aces and finished
the match with 57 points to prevail.
