Tommy Robredo plonks Simone Bolelli to enter final showdown – AON Open 2012 CH
Former world number five, Tommy Robredo, stunned the fifth seed, Simone Bolelli, in straight sets at the AON Open 2012 on Saturday. He penned down a 7-5, 6-2 victory against the world number 84 to secure a place in the title-round at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Genoa, Italy.
The Spanish veteran brought his experience into handy and consequently carved out the victory in one hour and 36 minutes. After pocketing this match, Robredo not only avenged his loss at the Open Sabadell Barcelona but also advanced into the title-round
at this outdoor clay court.
Robredo made a strong entry at the Italian dirt. He drew the first blood in the seventh game and jumped to a 5-3 lead. Apart from levelling the scores at 5-5, the Spaniard broke his opponent’s serve once again and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
He amazingly brushed off four out of five breakpoints he came across but capitalised on two out of six break opportunities.
Currently ranked 178th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo unveiled his class in the second set. He went on a four-game rampage before the Italian could hold on. The Spaniard bagged his remaining serves and sealed the
set by winning six games to two.
On the whole, Robredo dominated throughout the encounter. He clobbered a lower first serve share of 58 per cent as opposed to the seed’s 65 per cent but amazingly marked 26 out of 35 points on it. The Spaniard also struck five aces and sought 10 break opportunities
to dominate.
Robredo will square off against his seventh seeded compatriot, Albert Montanes. The seeded Spaniard bounced back to shock the fourth seed, Filippo Volandri, in a three-set thriller to set up this battle.
Montanes lost the opening set with a disappointing 1-6 defeat. However, he got in action after that and ultimately pocketed the match in two hours and 11 minutes. The Spaniard dusted away half of the 12 breakpoints he came across and cashed in six out of
15 break opportunities to earn the limelight.
