Tommy Robredo stuns Lukas Rosol to reach round two – AON Open 2012
Former world number five, Tommy Robredo from Spain, upset the Czech star, Lukas Rosol, in a three-set thriller at the AON Open 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Genoa, Italy. He hit back to formulate
a 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4 victory against the Brno native to book a spot in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
The Spanish veteran bounced back to outclass the sixth seed in two hours and 14 minutes at this outdoor clay court event. The contestants last met each other at the US Open two years ago and after pocketing this match, Robredo maintained his winning record.
The 27-year-old, who is responsible for the biggest upset at the Wimbledon Championships this season, convincingly entered the Italian courts. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the ninth
game, Rosol stayed calm and took the set to a tie-breaker. He edged past the Spaniard in it before sealing the opener with a 7-6(7) win.
Robredo made a stunning reply in the following set. He got the critical break in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. The Spaniard held his remaining serves with conviction and capitalised on another break chance in the last game to click the equaliser
by winning six games to two. He dusted away all four breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves and cashed in both break chances to get back in contention.
Currently ranked 178th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo re-gained his early form in the final set. He dusted away all three breakpoints he faced to swipe his entire serves. The Spaniard availed a single break opportunity
in the ninth game and clinched the decider with a 6-4 score line.
Up next for Robredo is the local challenger, Simone Vagnozzi, who also bounced back to overpower his opponent, Guido Andreozzi, in three sets to set up this match. The Italian made an epic comeback to formulate a 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1 score line in two hours
and 16 minutes.
