Tommy Robredo topples Nick Van Der Meer to enter quarters – Copa Sevilla 2012 CH
Local star, Tommy Robredo, got the better of the Dutch qualifier, Nick Van Der Meer, in straight sets at the Copa Sevilla 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Seville, Spain. He recorded a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory
against the 27-year-old to progress into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The former world number five, Robredo required a single break of serve to pull out the victory in one hour and 26 minutes in their first encounter. As a result, the Spaniard convincingly powered into the final eight at this outdoor clay court event.
Robredo, coming off from final showdown at the Genova Challenger, high-spiritedly stepped into the Spanish dirt. He smoothly plucked his entire serves without encountering any real challenge. Apart from failing to seek any break opportunity, the Spaniard
prevailed in the tie-breaker and subsequently clicked the opener with a 7-6(4) win.
Currently ranked 133rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He quickly pocketed his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. The veteran availed one out of six
break opportunities in the eighth game and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to three.
All in all, the 30-year-old manipulated an equal first serve share of 64 per cent but brilliantly marked 33 out of 38 points on it. He also struck three aces and finished the match with 68 points in contrast with Van Der Meer’s 55.
Next up for Robredo is the Argentinean challenger, Facundo Arguello, who crushed Netherlands’ Jesse Huta Galung with a breadstick to reach this spot. The Argentine stunned top seed Roberto Bautista-Agut in the opening round and is in tremendous run of form.
The eighth seed, Nicolas Devilder, faced a bitter reality later that day. He crashed out to Serbia’s Boris Pashanski and ultimately exited from the Real Club de Tenis Betis with regret. The seed failed to fend off all five breakpoints he faced. Adding further
to his misery, Devilder squandered all three break chances and eventually suffered a 1-6, 2-6 loss in 52 minutes.
