Tommy Robredo tops Adrian Ungur in opening round – Skistar Swedish Open 2012
Spanish wildcard entrant, Tommy Robredo, upset the eighth seed, Adrian Ungur, in straight sets at the Skistar Swedish Open 2012 on Monday. He jolted down a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the Romanian seed to book a spot in the second round at this outdoor clay court tournament in Bastad, Sweden.
The former world number five, Tommy Robredo, registered his first tour-level win after outclassing the Romanian at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event. After pocketing the match in 68 minutes, the Spaniard not only took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Ungur but also stayed on track to bid for his 11th career title.
Robredo enthusiastically entered the Swedish courts and held his serve in the opening game with poise. He then hammered angled shots and quickly pocketed entire serves without facing any barrier. The Spaniard got the breakthrough in the last game and clicked the opener by winning six games to four.
Currently ranked 199th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo kept momentum flowing into the following set and held his opening serves with self-assurance. After the Romanian plucked his serve in the fourth game, the Spaniard unleashed his skills and wiped out the last four games successively, eventually registering a 6-2 success.
Summing up the veteran’s performance, Robredo clobbered a better first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 60 per cent and magnificently clinched 25 out of 31 points on it. He also brushed off both breakpoints he faced and cashed in half of the six break chances to earn the glory.
Next in line for Robredo is the winner of the match between Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos and the Brazilian challenger, Joao Souza.
Earlier that day, Robredo presented officials the 2011 ATP World Tour 250 tournament of the year award.
"For us players when we are travelling all the year round, and when we go to one place and we feel at home it means that you deserve the trophy," explained Robredo, "so that’s why I’m voting for this tournament and a lot of my friends are voting this tournament."
The Swedish Open has won this award for a 10th consecutive year.
Jan Hajek of Czech Republic will accompany the Spanish veteran in the second round. He warded off early resistance to formulate a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory against Argentina’s Federico Delbonis to progress at this event.
