Tommy Robredo trounces Ivan Navarro to reach round two – Copa Sevilla 2012
In an all-Spanish duel, former world number five Tommy Robredo took down his compatriot, Ivan Navarro, in straight sets at the Copa Sevilla 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Seville, Spain. He juggled up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 217 to progress into the second round on Tuesday.
The sixth seeded Robredo re-ignited his old spark to overpower his fellow citizen in one hour and 14 minutes. After earning the fame, the Hostalric native not only avenged his loss at the Hamburg Masters three years ago but also advanced into the round of 16 at the Real Club de Tenis Betis.
The Sant Cugat del Valles resident, Robredo confidently entered this outdoor clay court event. He brilliantly warded off both breakpoints he came across to keep is entire serves. The winning Spaniard got the breakthrough in the fourth game and subsequently pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 133rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Robredo maintained his intensity in the following set. He cashed in half of the four break chances and jumped to a 5-1 lead. The higher ranked Spaniard held his serve one more and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
All in all, Robredo showed exceptional skills throughout the battle. He clobbered a lower first serve share of 60 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 70 per cent but smacked five axes to cover it up. The winning Spaniard also impressively marked 24 out of 29 points on it and sealed the match with 59 points.
Next up for the local wild card entrant is the Dutch qualifier, Nick Van Der Meer, who made an epic comeback from a set down to destroy France’s David Guez with double bagels.
The fifth seed, Inigo Cervantes, also stole the spotlight later that day. He tremendously kept his entire serves and capitalised on three out of seven break chances to manipulate a 6-3, 6-2 score line. The Spaniard fired nine aces and brilliantly clicked 31 out of 37 points on his better first serve share to prevail.
