Tommy Sugiarto expected to enter into national squad despite losing final of
Indonesia Open GP Gold
Indonesia’s young shuttler, Tommy Sugiarto lost the final of the 2011 Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold to compatriot, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka on Sunday, October 2. However, despite losing the final, he stands a good chance to regain his place in the Men’s
Singles national squad.
Sugiarto left training with the national squad in the start of the current year. Since then, the Indonesian has been working hard in training sessions and has earned a respectable place in the country as he has clinched three titles so far in the last nine
months. The excellent performances of Sugiarto for the last many tournaments have made him the most successful player of Indonesia in the current year.
Sugiarto made his mark in the current year when he clinched the 2011 Iran Fajr International Challenge in February. The aggressive shuttler continued playing good badminton and won the 2011 Indonesia International Challenge. His third title came when he
emerged as the winner of the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold.
He missed the chance to win his fourth title of the ongoing year when he lost the final to his team-mate, Rumbaka. He failed to put up a strong show against the lower ranked shuttler and lost the match in straight games.
After losing the match, Sugiarto expressed that he could not produce the same form in the final which he displayed in the semi-final against defending champion, Taufik Hidayat. Sugiarto thrashed the higher ranked Taufik in straight games.
However, it was a different story in the final, where he could not make his mark over Rumbaka. After the final match, Sugiarto said, “Congratulations to Hayom because he deserved to win. I think my best performance here was when I beat Taufik [Hidayat] in
the semi-finals.”
Sugiarto’s consistent performances for the last few months have made his chances to enter into the national squad quite bright. He is one of the most talented shuttler in the country, who has the skill to fill the place of Taufik and Sony Dwi Kuncoro in
the near future.
