Tommy Sugiarto ousts Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in Men’s Singles round-of-16: Indonesia Open GP Gold
Indonesia’s in-form Tommy Sugiarto had to play to his full potential for winning the Men’s Singles round-of-16 battle against his team-mate, Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, in the 2011 Indonesia Open GP Gold, at East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on Thursday, September
29.
World Number 19 ranked shuttler, Sugiarto, who is seventh seed in the Men’s Singles draw of the Indonesia Open, narrowly escaped from the spirited Shesar Hiren, who stretched the higher ranked opponent to a rubber-set fight that lasted for 60 minutes.
Sugiarto opened the first set in an attacking way against the un-seeded country-mate as he established a good lead of 7-3 in a flash. Shesar Hiren accelerated his speed to pick the bird early and remained successful in reaching at 6-8. However, Sugiarto
played an aggressive game and set up a five-point lead of 11-6 at the interval.
After the break, Sugiarto maintained a firm grip over the pace as he pushed his rival in all areas. His wonderful drop shots followed by powerful and accurate jumping smashes helped him in reaching at 17-12.
Shesar Hiren employed different tactics to reduce the difference but failed as his challenger was quicker in all areas of the court. Sugiarto won the first set with a six-point difference of 21-15 in 18 minutes.
In the second game, Sugiarto started to play in the similar way by dictating the pace of the bird. Nonetheless, Shesar Hiren also played a fast game this time and remained close until the interval, when he reached at 9-11.
After the break, Sugiarto executed a few negative strokes which helped his opponent to get into a strong position in the match. The seventh seed Sugiarto continued his negative play and lost the set with a margin of 17-21 in 19 minutes.
In the deciding game, both team-mates remained neck-to-neck until the score reached at 6-6. At this stage, Sugiarto played with extreme aggression and reached at 11-7 in the first-half.
In the second-half of the third game, the Indonesian remained focused this time and maintained a good difference in the whole set and won it by a 21-11 margin in 23 minutes. The concluding score of this 60-minute Men’s Singles round-of-16 contest was 21-15,
17-21 and 21-11.
