Tommy Sugiarto outshines Gurusaidutt in quarter-finals of 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG
Men’s Singles campaigner Tommy Sugiarto displayed unbeatable craft on the court and cast out R. M. V. Gurusaidutt in quarter-finals of Syed Modi International India GPG on December 21, 2012.
This hard fought tussle was staged at the local badminton arena of Lucknow and it kept both contenders busy until the final figures of 19-21, 22-20 and 21-16.
The first set of match was completely dominated by the native shuttler but the Indonesian player came back from a horrendous start and locked the honour in a splendid manner.
World Number 27 Tommy, who holds third spot in the tournament ranking, was bit confused in the opening game as he could not read his rival’s strategy.
Though, he took off in perfect manner and gained an early advantage but then few back-to-back mistakes brought him down.
He unleashed a flurry of power packed strokes and confined Gurusaidutt in the rear court. He maintained an upper hand until 9-3 but then the Indian shuttler stormed back with a strong reply and tipped the scale in his favour.
Both contenders remained equal until 18-18 and this nerve-racking tussle ended when Gurusaidutt swept the table with a significant margin of 21-19.
However, he could not continue his successful journey in the home event and crashed out in a disgraceful manner.
The Indonesian player switched on the best after going one down and confounded his challenger with an amazing craft on the court.
Initially, Tommy Sugiarto was under his rival’s influence but then couple of productive rallies helped him to end his bad patch.
He managed to finish first half of the set with a respectable score position of 11 and then capitalised that flow in latter part of the game. He maintained a decent advantage until the final moments and placed a winning margin of 22-20.
Third set kept the audience intact just until the half time as Tommy Sugiarto ruled the court after the mid-game break.
He started the beating after 10-10 and smacked his opponent down with a staggering knock of 21-16. This win took him to semi-final round where he will lock horns with Parupalli Kashyap of India.
