Tommy Sugiarto smacks Abhinav Manota in opening round of 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG
Indonesia’ spirited shuttler Tommy Sugiarto registered his presence in the Syed Modi International India GPG by sealing a splendid win in Men’s Singles opening round on December 19, 2012.
He was up against the native shuttler Abhinav Manota in local badminton complex of Lucknow, India but he played with great conviction to put a favourable margin of 21-11 and 21-7.
This short-lived tussle brought sheer disappointment for the local crowd that gathered to encourage Abhinav.
World Number 27 Tommy, who holds third spot in the tournament ranking, displayed commendable craft on court and his hard work ultimately paid off in shape of a straight-set victory.
On the other hand, the Indian shuttler was expected to put at least an honest effort against a higher ranked competitor but he knelt down tamely in both segments of the showdown.
First sign of trouble came for Abhinav when he failed to withstand an intensive attack in the opening game and remained at the lower end throughout this set.
Though, he showed some spark just before the interval but his fluctuated performance hit him hard.
The Indonesian campaigner placed an indomitable total of 11 at half time and then widened the gap in third quarter of the set.
Tommy kept on moving forward at steady pace and left his challenger far behind on the points table. He maintained a convincing lead of ten points and placed a winning margin of 21-11.
In following segment of the showdown, he looked in sublime touch as Abhinav could not find any flaw in his game plan and surrendered.
Initially, Tommy played with a cautious approach but then he played furious badminton to keep his challenger under control.
This power packed campaign completely dazzled the Indian shuttler as he could pocket only seven points throughout this set.
Tommy pushed his competitor on the back foot with a staggering knock of 11-4 and then cruised to victory with any major trouble.
He registered an overwhelming score of 21-7 and setup his next clash with the Malaysian player Zulhelmi Zulkiffli.
The critics are giving him better odds to make into final rounds as he will find relatively lower ranked opponents in the following rounds of Syed Modi International India GPG.
