Tommy Sugiarto stuns Taufik Hidayat in semi-final to extend his winning run: Indonesia Open GP Gold
Indonesia’s World Number 19 shuttler, Tommy Sugiarto is through to the Men’s Singels final after stunning higher ranked compatriot, Taufik Hidayat in the semi-final of the Indonesia Open GP Gold, on Saturday, October 1, in Indonesia.
Sugiarto played the best badminton of his career against the former World and Olympic Champion, Taufik, and won the match in straight games by spending just 33 minutes in the court.
Sugiarto opened the first game in stunning fashion as he established a superb lead in the starting points. He spared no chance for the second seed, Taufik, to dominate the game as his incredible speed and accuracy earned him a strong position in the match.
Until the break, Sugiarto was leading with a wonderful score of 11-5.
After the break, World Number Five, Taufik tried to reduce the deficit by playing fast badminton but his rival was quicker in anticipating the strokes. Sugiarto continued his killing run by playing on the highest level of the game. He finished the opening
game with an unbelievable margin of 21-10, by taking only 13 minutes in the court.
The score remained close in the first few points of the second set but the higher ranked Taufik started to build a lead by reaching 5-3. He was playing safe badminton this time as he knew that his challenger can accelerate the pace at any moment.
Sugiarto also chased well by playing to his maximum potential and levelled the score at 7-7. At this stage, both shuttlers became quite patient to wait for the right opportunity to secure points. Until the break, Sugiarto was the leader of the game by reaching
at 11-10.
Sugiarto remained in complete control of the game in the second-half and set up a convincing lead of 17-13. He surprised the crowd when he remained consistent in the second game and finished it with the difference of 21-15, in 20 minutes. The ending result
of this 33-minute semi-final showdown was 21-10 and 21-15.
In the Men’s Singles final, Sugiarto will take on his team-mate, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka who defeated another country-mate, Alamsyah Yunus in the other semi-final.
