Tommy Sugiarto topples Chan Kwong Beng in the Men’s Singles quarter-final: Indonesia Open GP Gold
Tommy Sugiarto, the third seed in Indonesia, continued his killing run in the Indonesia Open GP Gold as he toppled Malaysia’s Chan Kwong Beng in the Men’s Singles quarter-final on Friday, September 30, in Indonesia.
World Number 19 ranked shuttler, Sugiarto displayed his elite skills in his fight against the lower ranked Malaysian and finished the job in straight sets by taking just 42 minutes of court time.
The start of the opening game was thrilling as both shuttlers displayed an entertaining show of attacking badminton. Their incredible speed and court coverage helped them in getting behind the bird easily. The score remained tied for both sides as they were not sparing any chance to bury the bird deep into each other’s court.
The score was 5-5 when Sugiarto employed variations in his strokes that disturbed the flow of his challenger and earned him an 8-5 lead. He stretched his lead by reaching 11-6 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the Indonesia continued his domination over Kwong Beng until he reached at 19-12. The Malaysian lifted up his level of play and reduced the deficit by reaching at 15-19. However, the Indonesian secured the ending points to finish the first game by a margin of 21-15 in 15 minutes.
In the second game, Sugiarto opened the campaign with wonderful aggression as he took a lead of 10-3 in a flash. The perfectly executed smashes of the Indonesian landed on the side lines of the court.
However, Kwong Beng accelerated his speed to stop the aggression of Sugiarto and reduced the deficit by reaching 8-10. Until the interval, the Indonesia was leading with a decent margin of 11-8.
After the break, the local shuttler played positive badminton and extended his lead by reaching at 14-10. Kwong Beng was struggling to bridge the gap as the Indonesian returned the shots in the gaps. Beng played thrilling badminton and levelled the score by reaching at 19-19.
At this stage, Sugiarto played a safe and composed game and won the set by a 21-19 margin in 27 minutes. This Men’s Singles fight ended with the margin of 21-15 and 21-19. In the semi-final, Sugiarto will be up against either compatriot, Taufik Hidayat or Wang Zhengming of China.
