Tommy Sugiarto wins Men’s Singles crown – Singapore Open 2013
Men’s Singles expert, Tommy Sugiarto, of Indonesia performed exceptionally well in the final round of Li Ning Singapore Open and claimed the crown on Sunday, June 23, 2013.
He locked horns with another talented player Boonsak Ponsana and their meeting prolonged to 69 minutes before ending with decisive figures of 20-22, 21-5 and 21-17.
Though the Indonesian campaigner lost the opening game, he managed to tip the scale in his favour in ending two games. On the other hand, Boonsak failed to capitalise his first set win and surrendered tamely
in pressure situation.
The Thai shuttler, who was placed at fifth position in this tournament ranking, started his campaign in perfect manner. He prevailed in the establishing rallies of first set and gained an early advantage. This
initial lead helped him in piling up a respectable total in next couple of rallies. Though, he blundered just before the announcement of break but then few productive strokes helped him to place a decent margin of 11.
After the mid-game break, Boonsak dropped few valuable points in a row and allowed his competitor to proceed on the points table. Both shuttlers remained close till the game point situation and finally this tussle
ended when the Thai campaigner registered a winning margin of 22-20.
However, he could not go with the same flow in the following games as the Indonesian shuttler displayed a transformed character and brought the contest to right balance. This Tommy struck hard immediately in
the beginning and tipped the scale in his favour.
He ruled the court in next couple of rallies and proved himself superior technically and tactically. Tommy maintained a convincing lead of 16 points and wrapped this important segment of the showdown with 21-5
score.
The decider was expected to be a cliff-hanging contest as both finalists were looking to pocket this final match point. The game started with few back-to-back gruelling rallies but then Tommy established a strong
grip.
He played with great precision and did not give his rival even a single chance to bounce back. His unbeatable strategy helped him in locking the honour with an overwhelming figure of 21-17.
