  1. Don't let your nervousness overtake you. I've been on the swim team and I know how you feel. Just stay focused when your in the water, don't look at anyone when your swimming and just enjoy it!

  2. get a long warmup in and make sure you relax and have fun! focus on doing your best instead of winning (you're more likely to succeed if you don't focus on the outcome of the race, weird right?)

  3. From what it sounds like your coach is either putting you in more events than you're used to or you've never swam the IM at all. If either of these is the case then I have no clue what they're doing, both of those are just asking for disaster in a clutch situation (not saying that you as a swimmer aren't clutch but what if you could've scored 6 more points and you lose by 2?)

Anyways, the IM is just one of those events that you just have to swim, it doesn't have any specific weak points like the 500 free where flip turns determine whether you win or lose. But the 100 IM you just have to swim and see how you do, it's really just every stroke made into a sprint event. Go fast on your weak stroke(s) and sprint your strong ones.

Also with the other events just make sure that you stay hydrated and drink a lot. Also if these events are very close to each other you'll be forced to split your effort which typically isn't a good thing. Just don't eat too much or too little and you should do alright.

  4. Oh haha mehh too!  Im swimming against Elmodena HS tmrw and im swimming:

    500 Free

    200 IM

    50 Free

    200 Free Relay

You'll be fine just keep hydrated with Gatorade or water and stay loose. Stretch before your events so your muscles don't cramp or blow out.  You might be a little tired but have fun kicking your opponents butts and stay positive!  Good luck :]

  5. First of all, no one is able to sprint an entire 100 yard event.  So, you must do some planning for your race.

First, you should have a long warm up and get onto the blocks as close to the end of your warm-up as possible.  Your heart rate should be elevated.

Second, on the first length, many swimmers go fast on the first length and hold their breath.  That is 100% wrong.   Consider that the air you breathe in right now does not reach your muscles for about 30 to 40 seconds.  If you DON'T breath a LOT on the first length, then about the time you are at the 50 turn you are NOT getting the oxygen you need because you didn't breathe earlier!

So, on all 100 yard races, dive in, streamline, and one stroke after your breakout IMMEDIATELY start to breath.  However, at the end of your race, the air you breathe in the last 20 yards won't reach your muscles until AFTER you've finished swimming.  So, do your best to hold your breath on the last 20 yards.

In addition, you need to hold back on your speed on the first length of a 100 yard event.  Speed up on the second and third lengths and really BUST IT on the fourth.   A major mistake many swimmers make is holding back on the third length thinking that it will improve their fourth length ... they are wrong.  You should be speeding up on the third length and then sprinting the fourth.

The guide I give my swimmers is that you should never be going faster than you can hold for the remainder of the race.  That means that the second half of the race should be faster than the first half.

    GOOD LUCK!

  6. Go into the race with confidence.  Go out pretty hard and keep pushing it throughout the race and you'll do fine.  As long as you tried your hardest that's all that matters
