Tonio Liuzzi believes pay drivers should not be picked over skilled drivers – Formula 1 news
Tonio Liuzzi has said that he is tired of all the pay drivers in Formula 1.
Liuzzi is still unsure over his future for the 2012 season as he waits on Hispania Racing Team to confirm him as their race driver.
Liuzzi did a fine job for HRT considering he was given a below par car to race with. The Italian is an experienced driver and has a career spanning six seasons with teams like Red Bull, Toro Rosso and Force India prior to his HRT stint.
Although he was not able to score any points for HRT in the 2011 season, no one can really blame him as the equipment given to him did not match up to the standard of the cars targeting wins or even points. Keeping that point in view, it would not be so
fruitful for him to spend another year at HRT but he would be worse of spending the year out of the game.
Like many teams HRT is also considering pay drivers to bring in the cash, this has been the trend of recent teams not in real contention for top five constructor spots.
“I'm still linked with the team and have a long, multi-year contract,” Liuzzi told ESPNF1. “At the moment the team has been clear to me; it's a difficult period in terms of money so they are trying hard to find sponsors to be able to run me as per the contract.
But in the case that they are struggling then they might be forced to look for a driver that brings money.”
Liuzzi also said that he gives a 100 percent for his team and strives to get the best results but is very disappointed at understanding the reality that talent and experience are not being counted as relevant for a race seat rather it is the sponsorships
that can be brought in.
Recently, Bruno Senna was picked by Williams to replace Rubens Barrichello which in a way is being considered a move influenced by financial gains over talent.
However, Barrichello was always considered to be on the verge of losing his seat at Williams with a listless performance in the 2011 season.
