Tonique Williams-Darling receives an encouraging response for her summer clinic - Athletics news
Tonique Williams-Darling, the 35-year-old former sprinter from Bahamas, who was a gold medallist for 400m at the 2004 Summer Olympics, has opened up her summer clinic again this season.
The motivated athlete, who wishes to inspire her young nationals to opt for a healthy lifestyle, had kicked-off with the idea of opening up this clinic around three years ago, which was immediately materialised. Observing an impressive and encouraging start,
the clinic at New Providence is attracting a good number of youngsters from around the local communities.
The camp, which will last for a week at the Thomas A. Robinson Track and Field Stadium, is getting larger and larger with each passing year. With the aim to offer free athletics guidance to ages 12 and above, the clinic runs from 8 in the morning to 12 in
the noon. It stays open six days in a week.
By the end of the week, it will move to Abaco Central High School where it will serve young players for the same number of working hours. At New Providence, the camp kicked-off yesterday and observed a pack of 30-40 motivated youngsters who wanted to benefit
from free athletics coaching being offered by veterans of the game.
Talking about the success the camp is experiencing, Williams-Darling, the former world and Olympic champion said, “I’m very pleased to see the make-up of the group this year. I think it’s always good to see return campers because that means that they have
benefited from the program before and they are looking to improve more. We have one or two here from the Family Islands and we’re happy to see that.”
Revealing details, she said that besides newbie athletes, even players from some of the renowned clubs of New Providence were also visiting them and displayed an eagerness to join them in the long run. Amid the wide variety of experience the coaches at the
camp had to offer, sportsmen from varied disciplines of athletics visited them constantly to benefit from their professional advice.
