Central duo, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, have formed a solid partnership as the English Premier League giants secured UEFA Champions League spot on the last day of the season.
Former Arsenal FC skipper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tony-c35440 Adams, feels that consistent defensive pairing between Per and Koscielny could help the side bring silverware at the Emirates Stadium. Head coach Arsene Wenger has failed to find good defensive bond over recent years, with
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 out of form and Sebastien Squillaci departing the club in the summer.
“It's the only position where you need familiarity. You need to play with your mate on a regular basis to gain confidence and I think that really worked for Arsenal defensively,” he added.
The French central defender only played 23 times in the league in his three years at the club. Nevertheless, the pair did well and conceded only four goals in the 10 matches they played alongside at the end of last campaign. Therefore, Adams has supported
the duo to take charge next season as well.
“[Wenger] left that alone and they gained confidence. It's the fact that they play regularly with each other that they've learnt [about] each other's game,” he mused.
The former defender stated that the centre-back role is very important and you need consistent players on a regular basis. This gives them confidence and has helped the Gunners as they qualified for Europe’s elite cup competition last term. He said playing
with former Gunner Steve Bould was amazing as he followed a zonal system.
“I used to play with Steve Bould. We used to play zonal defence. Steve was a zonal defender and he knew how that system worked. Playing with Martin Keown was different,” the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 captain was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, another partner Martin Keown was a specialist in man to man marking and Adams adapted to his colleague style of playing as well. He admitted that changes were not welcome as things used to be tough. He said if he was playing with both
every other week, then his form would have suffered.
