Tony Bellew back on win track and knocks out Danny McIntosh to retain BBBC title – Boxing News
Tony Bellew, the former Commonwealth (British Empire) light heavyweight champion, successfully defended his BBBC British light heavyweight gold against fellow countryman and former EBU (European) light heavyweight champion, Danny McIntosh, by collecting
an impressive fifth-round knockout win, in a 12-round bout held on April 27, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Echo Arena situated in Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom and the above duo headlined the whole pay-per-view. The event was jointly promoted by David Coldwell of Coldwell Boxing and Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing.
Tony, 29, was entering in his career’s 18th bout and boasted 16 wins, 10 of them via knockout. The British proud was coming from a majority decision loss to Nathan Cleverly, a bout with WBO light heavyweight title up for grabs.
Bellew, also known as the ‘Bomber’, has substantially evolved into a prolific pugilist, the reason why he challenged Nathan in the first place. Tony’s opponent for the night, Danny, was entering in his career’s 16th bout and exhibited just 13 wins in his
resume.
The 32-year-old orthodox has nailed seven of his opponents by knockout and was making a comeback after 11-month gap. The veteran has proudly held the British Boxing Board of Control’s light heavyweight title several times and also won the EBU (European)
light heavyweight title in a bout against Thierry Karl.
Apart from all above stats, Danny was facing a huge problem as he was making a comeback after such a long time and unfortunately against a man who is already famous for his vicious jabs and brutal pounding.
But the ‘Big Mac’ still accepted the challenge and entered the ring confidently. The duo started things off and threw substantial well targeted jabs at each other. In the second round, Tony found an opening and connected a huge right hand that stunned Danny.
Danny absorbed the shock and came back in the bout but Tony halted him again in the fourth round when he connected another right hook and flattened Danny on the ring floor but the ring of the bell saved him.
In the eighth round after the passage of just 38 seconds, Tony moved in and leashed a wave of jabs that connected Danny’s face and body inflicting maximum damage. McIntosh got confused and in an attempt to push back Tony dropped his defence.
Tony capitalised it and threw a thunderous right hand blow that numbed Danny and provoked the bout-referee to end the bout. After the win, Tony commented, “I don't need Nathan Cleverly to make a name for myself, or a living. You've seen who he's fighting
- he's fighting No83 in the world. I'm supposed to be the one coming in off the loss and I'm fighting a former European champion and he's fighting 83 in the world.”
With this win Tony has collected 17 victories in his gear and 11 of them by knockout whereas Danny has received his third career defeat and interestingly all via KO.
