Tony Bellew beats Ovill McKenzie, aims Nathan Cleverly – Boxing news
The reigning Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew clinched the British light heavyweight title after securing a unanimous points’ victory over the Jamaican boxer Ovill McKenzie on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Liverpool’s Echo Arena in London.
Though the Wavertree Bomber, Bellew, failed to provide an explosive fight to the audience, he earned himself a victory by margins of 118-111, 118-111 and 119-110.
The 28-year-old Bellew, who has won all of his 16 fights including 10 by the way of a knockout, afterwards said he had a game plan and he just stuck to it.
“I told you - for the first time in my life I had to stick to a gameplan,” Bellew said. “Listen, I can box. I know what I can do. He's a dangerous, dangerous puncher. I knew that. I've got to thank my team for whipping me into fantastic shape.”
However, Bellew quickly came down to business and stated he wants to have a bout with the current WBA champion, Nathan Cleverly. He remarked he has proved his point now and if the promoter Frank Warren offers him a fight with the Welshman Cleverly, he will
definitely say yes to it.
Bellew also believes he is going to win against Cleverly as he thinks Cleverly cannot fight backwards.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “If Frank Warren wants to do it, I'll say yes. Cleverly can't fight going backwards, and believe me, he'll be going backwards in a fight between the two of us.”
The 24-year-old Cleverly, who also has won all of his 22 fights including 11 by the way of a knockout, was at the Liverpool’s Arena on the fight night to watch Bellew and he has also shown his interest to fight Bellew after watching his performance.
“I've not got a problem with it. It's been on before so let's get it on again,” said Cleverly.
Both unbeaten prospect, Bellew and Cleverly, were scheduled in May 2011 for the WBO title before Bellew was knocked out due to some weight issues.
However let’s see if Bellew and Cleverly face each other again, as it is surely going to be an explosive fight.
