Tony Drago expecting to shock the world in the PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
The Maltese Falcon, Tony Drago is currently in Bangkok with his teammate Alex Borg to represent his country, Malta, in the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup.
Both players will begin their campaign on Monday, July 11, 2011 and Drago believes he and Borg can shock the world by winning the World Cup.
The 2011 Snooker World Cup, which has been brought back to the calendar after almost 15 years, is featuring pairs who will have to compete in a series of five one-frame matches. Therefore, Drago believes the small country does have an equal chance of winning.
Drago told the media it is only a one-frame contest and whoever gets a chance first can win the frame. He added he knows what he and Borg are capable of doing.
He also revealed countries like Scotland and Wales who have some of the best snooker players in the world are not happy with the format as they know their chances of winning are not much despite having an upper hand.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “It's just one frame so you don't know what will happen. But it's exciting and the favourites are not happy and teams like Scotland and Wales wanted longer matches.”
“I know what I can do and I know what Alex can do and I think we have a chance. Shorter formats are better for the smaller countries and can produce shocks,” added Drago.
“I'm playing well at the moment but I wouldn't be too bothered if I was playing terribly as anything can happen with one frame,” he said.
According to the draw, Malta has tough competitors like China, Thailand 1, United Arab Emirates and Australia.
In this group, the only country which looks a bit weak is UAE. However, Drago thinks UAE can also upset any country since there is only one frame to be played.
“Ours is the Group of Death but we could beat the others and lose to UAE,” Drago remarked.
Let’s see if Malta can really shock the world by winning the 2011 Snooker World Cup.
