Tony Fernandes: Formula 1 should be freed from innovation debate – Formula 1 news
Tony Fernandes, the team principal of Caterham has said that all the contenders in F1 should focus on the right areas of the race rather than criticizing and questioning the legitimacy of innovations concerning the designs of the cars.
At present, the top rivals are passing contradictory statements about the legality of the new designs of each others’ cars and their compliance with the rules and regulations of International Automobile Federation (FIA).
For instance, where on one side the defending champions, Red Bull are raising question about the agreement of DRS-activated F-duct device of Mercedes with new FIA rules, on the other hand, the Brackley based team is striking back by posing queries on the
legitimacy of Red Bull’s engine.
Moreover, it would be interesting to know that Lotus team principal, Eric Boullier threatened to protest the qualifying result of the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia over the legality of Mercedes new device. Nevertheless, Charlie
Whiting, F1 race director expressed it to be legal afterwards.
Conversely, Fernandes who didn’t use any of the new devices still managed to impress everyone at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia in the second GP.
“Today you're asking about F-duct, Christian's (Horner) got one view, Ross Brawn wants to look at engine mapping. Out there, who cares? They just want to see good racing,” Fernandes told AFP.
Furthermore, he said that F1 should be free from the queries about the new devices while he said that the races should be for sake of enjoyment with fair competition.
“I don't understand the F-duct, I've got no idea, and I own a team,” he continued. “I think racing should be competitive, it should be fun, it should be glamorous, it should make people excited about it. I don't think anyone's interested about F-duct. I
think regulations need to be black and white.”
Nonetheless, he also said that F1’s rules should be completely clear and free from any loopholes so as to avoid any kind of issues later.
Fernandes, a Malaysian entrepreneur, revived Lotus team after quite a long time and they have secured tenth position in the constructors’ championship during the last couple of years.
Moreover, they aim to finish at tenth place in this season too.
