Tony Fernandes admits having two Lotus teams in Formula 1 not the best idea – Formula 1 news
Team Lotus’ team principal Tony Fernandes has recently stated that it is not the best of ideas to have two Lotus teams in Formula 1.
According to some rumours, it is believed that Team Lotus might change its name in the 2012 Formula 1 season.
“I always had a problem with 'Am I really Team Lotus?' because there's a big question mark on that. You can't have a name and not monetise it. So we will have to wait and see ... I don't think this is healthy for anyone, having Lotus Renault and Team Lotus,”
he was quoted by Reuters.
Lotus used to be one of the most legendary teams of the sport with a number of titles to their credit but unfortunately, the team had to depart from Formula 1 in early 90s. Since then, the team was not linked to the sport at all until 2010 when Tony Fernandes
and Group Lotus decided to form the team once again under the name.
Because of difference in opinion and other issues, Group Lotus and Team Lotus departed and now there are two teams running under the name Lotus as Group Lotus joined Renault and named it Lotus Renault GP.
“We had a pretty weird situation here and hopefully pragmatism will work out. When I came into this I said the most important thing was not to destroy the Team Lotus brand and we worked very hard to keep it,” he added.
Renault are doing pretty well this year but they are definitely not satisfied with their performance as they are way behind Mercedes GP in terms of pace and points as well.
Mercedes are in 4th place in the constructors’ standings while Renault are 38 points behind in 5th place. With just 6 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season, Team Lotus are yet to score their first points after their return while Renault will be hoping
to catch up with Mercedes and probably try to overtake them in the constructors’ standings.
