Tony Fernandes hoping for home support at Malaysian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Team Lotus’ boss Tony Fernandes has said that he is hoping for the crowd’s support at the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Sepang track will somewhat be considered as a home track for Team Lotus because most of their support staff belongs to Malaysia.
“There will be three teams here with links to Malaysia but only one team that has Malaysian blood running deep in its veins, with Malaysian staff contributing to our growth at every level and which has been built from the ground up in the same style as Formula
One's grandee teams,” Fernandes said.
Lotus is still at loggerheads with Lotus Renault GP over usage of the name ‘Lotus’. Both teams are trying hard to retain the rights of using the name ever since the 2010 season ended.
Even though Team Lotus and Renault both have their bases in England, Lotus are being sponsored by Malaysia’s AirAsia company while Renault are owned by Proton- a Malaysian car manufacturing company.
Team Lotus lost all support from most of the people related to this issue but it is expected that the matter would be solved in court. This case has been taken to the High Court of London which will give its verdict by the end of 2011.
Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes said that he felt proud of what the team has achieved in the past one and a half year.
“We're enormously proud of what we have already achieved in just 18 months and we have done it through hard work and dedication, not by buying seemingly instant success through stickers on a car,” Tony stated.
He added that the team is going to work extremely hard to develop their car and is hoping to score good results in the 2011 Formula 1 season and make ground for the upcoming seasons.
However, he stated that the team is not going to “rush” into anything and is going in the right direction. He appreciated AirAsia’s support and said that the team has scored some historic results in the past and aims on doing the same in future as well.
