Tony Fernandes says Lotus still need to improve during races – Formula 1 news
Team Lotus principal Tony Fernandes has said that although they were better in the 2011 Singapore race weekend, but they still need to improve in terms of reliability during the races.
Fernandes added that team has no excuse for reliability glitches, which their driver Jarno Trulli faced during the Singapore Grand Prix.
Trulli had a gearbox issue in his T128 car during the Singapore race and due to that he had to retire from the Grand Prix after completing 47 laps.
Despite Trulli’s retirement from the race, Fernandes stated that he is sure the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix was their strongest ever racing performance on the grid. In addition, he mentioned that the upgrades which had been delivered to their car worked out
really well for them throughout the race weekend at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
He admitted that the car’s pace has improved with the new updates in Singapore as compared to the initial races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
The Hingham-based outfit principal commented, “I'd just like to have a race without some of the bad luck that struck again in Singapore. I'd had such a good start and was holding off the Toro Rosso and both Renaults well, even running 11th at one point as
we went into the first round of stops, but the puncture I suffered when Alguersuari hit me was just another one of those things.”
He went on to mention, “Hopefully in Suzuka I can make up for that and get as much out of the car as I did on Sunday around Marina Bay.”
Fernandes discussed Trulli’s issues which he suffered in Singapore. He said his driver again suffered with bad luck. In addition, he mentioned that that they need to make improvements in terms of reliability for the rest of the ongoing season.
Trulli’s teammate Heikki Kovalainen performed better at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and came at the 16th position ahead of Renault’s Vitaly Petrov in the final race classifications as well.
Let’s see how Team Lotus driver Kovalainen performs in the last stages of the 2011 season following his better Singapore race results.
