Tony Grano knocks out DaVarryl Williamson to grab vacant NABF heavyweight title – Boxing News
Tony Grano, the former World Boxing Foundation All Americas heavyweight champion, defied all odds and collected an impressive fourth round knockout win over veteran DaVarryl Williamson, the former WBO NABO and WBC continental Americas heavyweight champion,
in a 12-round bout held on June 23, 2012.
The above duo headlined the showdown organised and promoted by Don King of Don King Productions. The night was co-headlined by the non-title lightweight 10-round bout between Angelo Santana and Justin Savi.
Tony, 31, was entering his career’s 23rd bout. The Connecticut proud was all set to grab the vacant NABF heavyweight title and he did do so in a charismatic fashion by completely dominating and outfoxing Williamson.
The bout started in a very sluggish manner so much so that the whole arena started booing the duo. Williamson tried his level best to evade Tony, the reason why only two punches were thrown in the first two rounds.
From the third round and onwards, Grano decided to move in and after finding an opening leashed a wave of jabs that stunned the 43-year-old Washington proud. The damage was substantial and in the fourth round, Tony decided to connect the final decisive blow.
At just two minutes and 27 seconds, Grano threw a beautiful right-left combination that connected well and flattened Williamson on the ring floor once and for all. After engraving his name for the very first time on the NABF gold, the triumphant Tony stated,
“DaVarryl caught me with a good right hand in the second round. I didn’t want to get caught again, so I started moving to my right and resetting before he had a chance to try and tag me with those long arms.”

The excited champion further added, “To be honest, I expended a lot of energy, so I regained my composure in the fourth and caught him right on the button with a right hand for the knockout. I think I showed everyone tonight that I have a knockout punch. I’d
like a shot at Vitali Klitschko before he retires.”
Williamson should seriously think about hanging his gloves as this was his seventh career loss and above all from a pugilist of half experience. Tony, on the contrary, now has a golden chance to attract Vitali’s attention. A few more wins and Grano will
definitely get the World champion on his tail.
