Tony Grano takes on returning DaVarryl Williamson for vacant NABF heavyweight title – Boxing News
Tony Grano, the current World Boxing Foundation All Americas heavyweight champion, has been scheduled to take on the returning veteran pugilist, DaVarryl Williamson, the former WBO NABO heavyweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on Saturday
June 23, 2012.
The above duo will collide for the vacant NABF heavyweight title and will constitute the headline event of the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Don King of Don King Productions. The ring for the epic battle will be set up at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel
and Casino situated in Hollywood, Florida, United States.
The showdown will also witness Samuel Peter, the former IBF, WBO, and International Boxing Organization heavyweight champion make a comeback after the passage of 15 long months against an opponent who will be decided in the upcoming days.
Tony, 31, has been in a total 22 bouts and emerged victorious in 19. The orthodox pugilist has nailed 15 of his opponents by sheer knockout and recently collected his career’s second loss from Nicolai Firtha, a bout in which he lost the chance to grab the
NABA USA heavyweight title.
His opponent, DaVarryl, 43, is a veteran who is making a comeback after the time lapse of almost 15 months. Williamson possesses a clear upper hand over Tony as far as the experience is concerned and even possesses a pretty decent knockout ratio as well.
Williamson has been in a total 33 bouts and boasts 27 wins with 23 coming via knockout. Also known as ‘The Touch of Sleep’, DaVarryl left the sport after collecting a knockout win over Michael Marrone and since then this will be the first time he is entering
the ring again.
DaVarryl possesses an upper hand in all facets of the sport except one. His wrists and jabs are bit rusty at the moment and he might take time in the initial rounds to warm up and get back his pace.
Other than above, as far as the stats and technicalities are concerned, DaVarryl overshadows Tony. Williamson is not only bigger in height but also has a far powerful jab than Tony.
The height will give DaVarryl the reach advantage whereas the experience when combined with the powerful knockout ability will aid Williamson in knocking Tony out most probably in the early rounds.
Tony just has one advantage in his gear that is take on DaVarryl in the very early rounds with full force so as to collect a knockout win otherwise, as the time passes, Williamson will understand his brawling style and will definitely come up with a plan
of his own.
