Tony Gunawan – Vita Marissa nail Mixed Doubles title at US Open Grand Prix Gold 2012
USA’s Tony Gunawan and Indonesia’s Vita Marissa showed their elevated class and nailed Mixed Doubles title after crushing their higher ranked rivals Kenichi Hayakawa and Misaki Matsutomo of Japan in the final battle of Yonex OCBC US Open Grand Prix Gold
2012 in Los Angeles, on Saturday, July 7.
The un-seeded Gunawan and Marissa, who have been playing tremendous badminton throughout the tournament, played on a different level in the title match and thrashed the third seeded Hayakawa and Matsutomo in a fabulous fashion.
The lower ranked Gunawan and Marissa were impressive on court in the final encounter as they did not let their Japanese opponent to find a good flow in the entire fight and ended it in straight games with a huge margin on the board.
On the other hand, Hayakawa and Matsutomo player aggressive badminton in opening set but could not maintain their positive run.
They failed to cope up with the speed and perfection of their lower ranked opponents and lost the battle in a one-sided manner in just 23 minutes.
In the first game of title match, the higher ranked Japanese shuttlers played fast badminton by taking the bird early and managed a 9-5 lead.
However, they could not maintain the gap as Gunawan and Marissa changed their tactics and scored six consecutive points to take an 11-9 lead until the break.
After the interval, Gunawan and Marissa continued their aggressive performance on court and managed to wrap up opening game with a huge 21-13 score on the board.
In the following set, Gunawan and Marissa did not slow down their speed and maintained an impressive pressure on their rivals until the one-minute interval when they were in strong position by reaching at 11-6.
After the break, Gunawan and Marissa continued crushing their rivals without showing any mercy. They were in wonderful control of rallies and eventually ended up the second game in a one-sided fashion by a tremendous margin of 21-10.
Gunawan and Marissa emerged as title winners as they overpowered Hayakawa and Matsutomo in the final battle with a smashing 21-13 and 21-10 score on the board.
