Tony Hanks: No truth in Gavin Henson rumours
London Wasps director of rugby Tony Hanks has confirmed that the club has not signed Gavin Henson despite a number of media reports.
Newspaper reports have suggested that the out-of-favour Ospreys player would link up with Wasps after following through commitments with the BBC. However, Hanks has since confirmed that there is no truth
in the rumours.
Ospreys has released a statement, which says that Henson has shown the Welsh club no desire to leave the club and the region. This contradicts further stories that have said Henson is seeking a move to
a new club in order to secure a fresh start in the game.
Hanks said: "We haven't signed Gavin Henson, we are not in any negotiations with Gavin Henson and I do not expect him to be at this club this season. Would I know about it if anyone else in the club had
signed him? Absolutely. Do I think that would happen? No I don't."
Henson is a very good player with a lot of skill but there is a whole list of reasons why Wasps are right not to be interested in him. The rumour mill always links high profile players with big English
clubs.
Club doesn't need him
The club doesn't need Henson because there are already some good players at centre. Riki Flutey is the best player the club currently has in this position and there is no need to replace him with an unstable
player.
Hanks is a very passionate and energetic coach that demands the best from his players constantly. It would defy logic if this sort of coach actively sought out signing a player that has said he has lost
a lot of love for rugby.
Henson has not played rugby for a long time and any club that signs him will have to spend a lot of time improving his match fitness. This is not time that club's can afford to waste at the start, middle
or end of a season.
The rumour mill
The rumour mill always links high profile players with high profile clubs. Therefore it is no surprise that Henson has been linked with Wasps because the club is arguably the best club in London.
The New Zealander, Hanks, has said that he is growing increasingly irritated with the nonsense rumours that are attached to his club. It seems that Hanks wants to move on and focus on the players that
will determine whether Wasps has a good season.
He added: "I have become irritated by this. As far as I'm aware the guy's doing some dancing and he's under contract at Ospreys. There are 35 guys in our squad who deserve our attention and time. We should
be talking about them. We haven't signed Gavin Henson."
Betting advice
Wasps does not need this player so ignore any special odds that are offered on Henson joining Wasps after his television commitments. The club already has a very good squad that has a decent outside chance
of making the top four by the end of the season. Have a punt on Hanks's men to do this because he seems very determined.
The club has powerful players in the middle of the pitch that can get forward and score tries. Flutey will score regularly over the course of this season and Andy Powell is another good bet to score a
lot of points.
Also focus on the kicker in the team. the kicker has more chances to score through penalties and conversions and will often accumulate the most points by the end of the season.
