Tony Jeffries challenges newly crowned champion George Groves for a bout – Boxing news
Olympic Bronze medallist Tony Jeffries has challenged the newly-crowned British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves.
The Saint, Groves, who already had the Commonwealth belt, added the British title in his grudge match against bitter rival James DeGale in a narrow-point decision at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday, May 21, 2011.
The Chunky, DeGale, demanded an immediate rematch after the results were announced but the Mighty Mackem, Tony Jeffries, wants to be one step ahead of the 25-year-old Olympic gold medallist, DeGale, on Groves’ fighting list.
Jeffries’ promoter, Frank Maloney, in the meanwhile believes that Groves may well accept the challenge, as he told the media that he already had spoken with Groves’ trainer and manager Adam Booth about the bout a couple of months ago.
He added, “When the DeGale fight was in the balance I mentioned the Commonwealth title defence against Tony at the Stadium of Light. He said the DeGale fight was likely to take place, but a fight against Tony is something they would consider afterwards if
he won. I am now throwing down the challenge and hopefully we can sit down and see if we can come up with a package.”
Maloney, who is a boxing manager and promoter, has claimed his fighter is going to win the fight against Groves. Moreover, he also commented on Adam’s strategy.
While speaking on his inclusion he remarked, “Adam worked out a good strategy for George and the tactics were spot on. But from what I saw it was a high quality amateur fight and I do believe Tony would beat George, even if few will believe me.”
Meanwhile Tommy Brooks, who is best known as the trainer of Evander Holyfield, is surprised by the sudden development from Jeffries. However, he stated he is going to look into the fight pretty seriously but on the same note he said it was all down to George
Groves in the end.
Let’s see if Groves accepts the challenge and sets up a potential clash with the 26-year-old Tony Jeffries as it certainly is going to be a promising match.
