Tony La Russa belittles New York Mets’ pitcher R.A. Dickey and third-baseman David Wright - MLB
The New York Mets’ players feel being snubbed as the National League All-Star Game manager Tony La Russa unveils names of the players that will start on July 10. Both R.A. Dickey and David Wright have not been given the kind of role that will justify with
the performance they have put up in the season.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins steps up to acknowledge excellent shows fared by his players in the season. He believes that it is the system to which they have to bow down despite the fact Dickey had better credentials to start on the day.
Similarly, Wright was a better choice for designated-hitting job, for which he has not been selected by Russa.
Furthermore, Collins elaborated that there are many other players who believe that Wright was more appropriate for the job. He stated that when he passed by locker room, he overheard almost five players discussing Wright for the designated hitting job.
Collins calls it a great achievement that even when none of their players has been named, there is a general perception in favour of them.
“When you are in our shoes, we’ve had a very good first half and we have two guys here to represent that,’’ Collins said. “I think that’s a compliment to the organization. Walking through the locker room, I’ve had five players say, ‘David should be starting.’
He’s not. It’s the system. I’m sure they are telling him that.”
Meanwhile, Dickey is even blunter in hinting that they have been belittled and that Russa is little biased against them. He is hurt by the fact that none of the Mets has been allowed representation.
“Was one of my bigger disappointments because I really felt like it would have been a neat thing for the New York Mets organization and the fan base,” Dickey said.
While Dickey is not starting, he will be preparing for the limited role he is going to play now. Therefore, the fans will at-least have the opportunity to watch his knuckler-balls on the All-Star Game day.
Regardless of the announcement by Russa, the Mets still have a lot of things to feel proud of. After all, their players are being discussed and their performance in the season is being acknowledged.
