Tony Langley’s Gladiator takes early lead: Day 1 - 2011 Audi TP52 World Championship, Sardinia
An impressive piece of sailing skills from Great Britain’s Gladiator, skippered by Tony Langley on Day 1 has brought the team on the leading position of 2011 Audi TP52 World Championship in Sardinia. The British team sailed for the leader board podium with
four points grabbing a third and first place in the two races on first day.
Gladiator’s skipper, Tony Langley, tactician, Chris Larson and navigator, Nacho Postigo, set an impressive sail under lighter winds on the first day to start the event campaign. They clinched a third place in the first race behind America’s Quantum racing
and Germany’s Container. However, they dominated the second race completely to hit the leading berth with four points.
Gladiator did not compete in many events of the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit due to certain reasons but in the TP52 World Championship, they have come back with a solid start. The side have taken a strong position in the match but they can be challenged by the
2011 Audi MedCup Circuit winners, Quantum Racing, who are at second place with the same scores.
While speaking to local media at the end of Day 1, Langley said, “That is the best result we have had in a day and we have never lead any regatta at this level, so it feels really good. You hope all the work and effort we all put in over the season will
pay off one day, and never really expect it to, but here we are.”
He added, “Chris was spotting shifts early and positioning us nicely when we were coming into traffic and for me that made all the difference. So I am very happy. But we won’t be letting it got to our heads; there is a long way to go yet.”
The overall standings at the end of Day 1 of 2011 Audi TP52 World Championship are given below:
1. Gladiator (GBR) 3, 1 = 4 points
2. Quantum Racing (USA) 1, 3 = 4 points
3. Paramount Park Murcia (ESP) 4, 2 = 6 points
4. Container (GER) 2, 7 = 9 points
5. Audi Azzurra Sailing Team (IT) 5, 4 = 9 points
6. RÁN (SWE) 6, 5 = 11 points
7. Audi ALL4ONE (GER) = 13 points
