Tony Martin all set for the 2012 UCI Road World Championships
Despite a very busy season, Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is still on track for the UCI Road World Championships in Limburg.
“I’m still on course for the Worlds,” Martin said. “My feelings during the time trial were good. Even during the technical start I did well, so there’s no need to worry”.
The cyclist is currently seen in action at the Vuelta a Espana where his main role is to support the team leader and also to target the stage victories for himself.
His 11th place finish during the stage 11 of the Vuelta shows that the German still has enough to offer in the coming stages of the Spanish race.
“Even though I didn’t get the placing I had hoped for in the time trial, I am quite satisfied,” Martin said on his personal website after the 11th stage.
“As I feared beforehand, the climb made me grit my teeth. I have to admit that I still have some improvement to make uphill”.
“You can’t afford weakness on a climb against guys like Contador, Rodriguez and Froome, who are much lighter than me”.
Fredrik Carl Wilhelm Kessiakoff of Team Astana wins the race after he completed the 39.4 kilometre race in an impressive time of 52 minutes and 36 seconds.
Alberto Contador Velasco of Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank occupied the second spot with Team Sky cyclist Christopher Froome at the third position.
Alejandro Valverde, Benat Intxausti Elorriaga, Richie Porte, Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver, Cameron Meyer, Andrew Talansky and Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas occupied the next seven positions in the respective order.
Martin has filled his bag with several victories in the season including the National Time Trial Championships and an overall victory at the Tour of Belgium.
He occupied the second overall position at the Volta ao Algarve and fifth at the Tour of the Basque Country along with a stage victory at the Tour of Belgium 2012.
The UCI Road World Championships returns to Holland after 14 years since 1998 and it will the sixth time in total for Netherlands to host the contest.
The 2012 edition of the UCI Road World Championships are scheduled between September 15 and 23 and the reigning Champion Mark Cavendish is all set to defend his rainbow jersey in Holland this year.
