Tony Martin all set to defend his Tour of Beijing title
Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-QuickStep has done well to maintain his overall lead at the last World Tour race of the season, the Tour of Beijing 2012.
The cycling is holding the first overall spot with an impressive lead of 40 seconds over Francesco Gavazzi of Team Astana.
Daniel Martin of Team Garmin-Sharp is ten seconds behind at the third position with Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky Procycling and Eros Capecchi of Team Liquigas-Cannondale securing the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
The German is having a terrific season with a number of good performances under his belt including first place finishes at the World Time Trial, World Team Time Trial and National Time Trial Championships 2012.
He finished second overall at the Volta ao Algarve, fifth overall at the Tour of the Basque Country and claimed the first overall victory at the Tour of Belgium along with a stage victory at the race.
Despite having several victories under his belt, the German has not grabbed as many UCI points as he would have liked to secure his position for the new season.
Tony has only claimed 65 UCI points in the current season and is in great position to add some important points to his tally by registering an overall victory at the Tour of Beijing 2012.
However, he is not the only cyclist looking to enhance his overall position as almost every single cyclist is riding the Chinese race with the very same objective.
Winner of the race will be awarded with a 100 UCI points while the second and the third position finishers will receive 80 and 70 points respectively.
The 27-year-old started the contest slowly, but picked up the pace right from the stage 2 of the event after his heroic performance that helped him winning the stage 2 of the Tour of Beijing 2012.
Martin also holds the honour of winning the first ever edition of the Tour of Beijing back in 2011 and is all set to defend his title.
With only one more stage to go, the German is ideally placed to claim an overall victory at the final World Tour race of the season.
