Tony Martin continues the recovery process at his home
Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step is lucky to have survived any major injuries after the cyclist crashed during a training ride.
He was hit by a car that left him with several fractures on his jaw, shoulder, cheekbone and eye socket.
Tony was immediately taken to the University Clinic in Zurich under the watchful eyes of his Team Manager Jorg Werner.
The cyclist is now going through the recovery process at his home after the doctors confirmed that he does not need any surgery.
Martin noted, “My face is still very swollen, the left eye red and shut,” he wrote on his website. “I still can't move my arm properly”.
“All in all, I and doing quite well, when you think that my accident was only two and a half days ago. It could have been much worse”.
“It is good that I landed on my left side and not face-first. Probably I have had so many crashes as a pro that I automatically curled up and prepared myself for the crash in less than a second”.
Tony is not able to eat properly because of the broken jaw and is currently on a soft diet for the time being.
He started the 2012 season with a second place finish at the Volta ao Algarve and also finished 5th at the Tour of the Basque Country.
The 26-year-old started riding professionally with Team HTC-High Road for the 2008-11 seasons.
The American team announced its exit from professional cycling by the end of the 2011 season and accepted an offer from Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step for the 2012 season.
He had a terrific past season and claimed stages at the Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana, Criterium du Dauphine, Volta ao Algarve, Paris-Nice, Tour of Beijing and the Tour of the Basque Country.
He also occupied the first overall spot at the Volta ao Algarve, Paris-Nice, Tour of Beijing and Chrono des Nations in the 2011 season.
The cyclist will now re-visit the doctor in a week’s time which will determine his return to professional cycling.
Only time will tell, if the German cyclist recovered in time to continue his goals of the 2012 season.
