Tony Martin takes time trial crown from Fabian Cancellara in World Championships 2011
HTC-Highroad team’s Tony Martin was fastest in each split and took the time trial crown from previous 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 winner Fabian Cancellara in UCI World Championships 2011 on Wednesday, September 21.
The 26-year-old German professional cyclists took a total of 53 minutes and 43.85 seconds to cover the distance of 46.4 kilometres. Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain) took the silver medal with the difference of 1 minute and 15.83 seconds.
The defending Champion Cancellara (Switzerland) was in third place with a difference of 1 minute and 20.59 seconds ahead of Bert Grabsch and Jack Bobridge.
After winning the stage, Martin told the media, “In the last kilometre I was sure that I was going to win. It’s such a good feeling. It’s a dream come true. It’s amazing for me.”
He further added, “David was one of favourites and for sure when you pass him and you are 1:30 faster, you must be having a good ride. I gave my all, so I was really happy. I felt under pressure but I’ve learnt to work with the pressure.”
Martin delivered Germany their second Elite Championship as today earlier, HTC-Highroad team-mate Judith Arndt took the gold medal in the Women’s time trial Champions.
Alexandr Dyachenko (Kazakhstan) started the race with 20 cyclists and showed a good performance in the stage but grabbed ninth place with 3 minutes and 19.76 seconds down to the German. Fabian had been split and in the last course he was faster than Wiggins
and was able to gain a lead throughout the race. Nonetheless, Fabian was unable to hold his pace and Wiggins took the silver medal as Fabian finished third.
However, Martin controlled the situation of the stage and crossed the finish line ahead of the other cyclists to take his first Elite victory. David Millar (Great Britain), Lieuwe Westra (Netherlands) and Alexandr Dyachenko were in seventh, eighth and ninth
place respectively.
Recently, Martin took the fifth stage and overall lead in Volta ao Algarve, along with the sixth stage and overall standing in Paris-Nice. He also secured runner-up spot in Tour de Romandie.
Matt Brammeier (Ireland) did not finish the race, Semere Mengis was disqualified and Azzedine Lagab (Algeria) did not start the race.
