Tony Martin targeting the Tour of Romandie 2012
Tony Martin of Team Omega Parma-Quick Step had a slow start to his 2012 campaign but the cyclist is positive to claim victories in the coming part of the season.
He is currently warming up for the Tour of Romandie and believes that his current form is good enough to earn him a podium spot.
The cyclist had a terrific past season and had as many as five victories in his bag this time last year, including the overall victories at the Paris-Nice and the Volta ao Algarve.
The German Professional cyclist has not yet opened his 2012 winning account and is counting on the Tour of Romandie to grab his first win of the season.
Martin came close to victory during the Volta ao Algarve 2012 but fell short of Richie Porte after the final general classifications and had to settle for the second overall spot.
He again had the opportunity during the six-day race, Tour of Basque Country but only managed to grab the fifth overall spot with a deficit of 54 seconds on the race leader.
Samuel Sanchez of Team Euskaltel-Euskadi claimed the overall spot with Joaquim Rodriguez, Bauke Mollema and Damiano Cunego claiming the next four positions.
Tony wrote on his personal website, “As expected, the 'mountain goats' were practically unbeatable [in the time trial]”.
“I made the best of it with my third place and seven seconds down on Sanchez. There was nothing more I could do”.
“It was, however, enough to move him from 17th overall to fifth”.
“But more importantly, the race brought me the proof that my form is good and that I am in shape for the coming races”.
The 26-year-old started his professional pursuit with Team HTC- High Road in 2008 and stayed with the side through 2011.
He accepted an offer from Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step in 2012 and is determined to find his last year’s winning momentum.
Tony is now focusing on the 14th biggest race of the season, Tour of Romandie, “It will depend on the weather, whether I head south again or train at home in Switzerland”.
Martin finished second during the Tour of Romandie 2011 and is optimistic to improve his performance at the coming version of the race, scheduled from April 24-29.
