Tony Martin wins the German National Championships
Tony Martin of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step wins the 40.6 kilometre Elite Men Time Trial event at the German Road Championships and bagged his second victory at the event.
He managed an average speed of 51.4 km/h and restricted his team-mate Bert Grabsch at the second position.
Tony crossed the finish line in a quickest time of 47 minutes and 21 seconds and put 1 minute and 26 seconds into Bert Grabsch.
Lars Teutenberg of Team FC Lexxi Speedbike, Stefan Schumacher of Team Christina Watches and Nils Plotner of Team Raiko Stolting occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Martin was delighted after the race and briefed that the victory has really boosted his confidence which he can use at the Tour de France.
He briefed that winning the championships is very significant also from the Olympics perspective.
“I'm really happy about my race," Tony said.
"Today I was looking for a good result, and a good performance, and I got both. It's important even for the confidence prior to the Tour de France”.
“It was a good test in function for an important event such as the Olympics”.
“It was nice to win in front of my friends and my family, It was great”.
“Even Bert did a great race. Tomorrow I'll go home, I will recover, and I will focus on the last training sessions before the Tour," he concluded.
The 27-year-old is having a terrific season and is looking good for the most prestigious cycling race of the season, the Tour de France 2012.
He bagged an overall victory at the Tour of Belgium, finished second at the Volta ao Algarve and claimed the fifth overall spot at the Tour of the Basque Country.
To his credit, Martin has five Grand Tour appearances which include three Tour de France, one Vuelta a Espana and one Giro d’Italia participation throughout his career.
On the other hand, Jasha Sutterlin wins the Under 23 Men category of the race with Harry Kraft, Jakob Steigmiller, Nikias Arndt and Mario Voigt holding the next four positions.
It will be interesting to see, if Tony continuous his tremendous form at the Tour de France as he will be supported by a strong Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step line-up.
