Tony Romo and New York Giants expecting Jason Witten in season opener – NFL News
Even though Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has not yet received clearance to play the season opener against the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants on September 05, his teammate quarterback Tony Romo and the defending Champions expect him
to play.
Witten’s case will receive a direction on Tuesday, September 04, when he will get a word from the management about his participation in the game.
Although the player has hoped to make it to the squad, the team is not up for taking any risk that could prevent the tight end from giving his hundred percent during the next games of the season. Even if Witten misses the game against Giants, he is expected
to be a regular part of the starting line-up from Week 2.
Despite facing an unclear situation around Witten’s prospects, Romo is hopeful of having the tight end against the Giants and the quarterback thinks that Witten’s presence will give boost to the Cowboys squad.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Romo referred to Witten’s participation in Saturday’s practice session and said:
“The good thing is, J’s been out here. So, for me, it’s kind of exciting to know that we’re probably going to have him in the game. That’s something that’s important.”
Meanwhile, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has said that the Giants are preparing as if Witten is going to play. This provides the Giants an opportunity to take leverage if the tight end is unable to make it to the final line-up against them.
Coughlin told reporters via a conference call on Saturday:
“We usually take the position that the player is going to play. If it’s otherwise, it’s otherwise, but we’re not going to be surprised the other way. We’re not going to say that he’s not going to play and then he plays.”
Even Coughlin appreciated Witten as a player. The Giants coach said of the tight end:
“He leads the team in receptions far and away. The quarterback is very comfortable in all circumstances getting him the ball.”
It should be noted that Witten is one of the most consistent players in the entire league as he has only missed one game in his nine-year professional career.
