Tony Romo struggles as Chicago Bears dominate Dallas Cowboys 34-18 – NFL Recap
One of the worst nightmares for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo came true on Monday, October 01, 2012, during Week 4 game in which he sent five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns as Chicago Bears dominated Cowboys, 34-18, at Cowboys
Stadium.
Romo completed a total of 31 passes of 43 attempts for 307 yards. He got one touchdown and threw five interceptions, forcing the team management to replace him with Kyle Orton, who ended up completing nine of his 10 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown.
The Cowboys quarterback was quoted by the team website as saying:
“We have to just keep figuring out a way to execute better. They’re simple things sometimes. The No. 1 factor is taking care of the football. I know that. We preach it to the guys every day. And it’s obviously frustrating when I was the one who turned it
over tonight. The last couple of interceptions were just stupid.”
Cowboys’ sloppiness was evident right from the start. After the scoreless first quarter, Bears got some momentum in second quarter by getting a field goal. Their efforts were further supported by the Cowboys’ offence when Romo’s interception was returned
for a touchdown by Charles Tillman, who ran for 25 yards to reach the end zone.
Towards the end of the quarter, Romo and Miles Austin connected for a 10-yard pass that resulted in touchdown and both teams entered halftime with Bears in lead, 10-7.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler sent a 34-yard pass to Devin Hester in third quarter for a touchdown to increase the lead. Later, Romo’s another pass was intercepted and this time Lance Briggs ran for 74 yards to get a touchdown on the return.
Cowboys got a field goal in the quarter at the end of which they were trailing by 14 points.
Bears scored a field goal in the final quarter and later Cutler sent a 31-yard pass to Brandon Marshall for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 24 points.
In the final few seconds of the game, Orton provided some consolation to the Cowboys when he found tight end Jason Witten from five yards to get a touchdown.
Overall, it was a sluggish show from Cowboys, especially their offence, as Bears got the well deserved victory.
Bears coach Lovie Smith said after the game:
"Just outstanding play by our defence. It seemed like everybody had a say in it.”
Witten said after the game:
“This has to be a wake-up call for us. I don't say that nonchalantly.”
He added:
“You can't bounce back and forth like this, and try to compete come December-time.”
It was Bears’ second straight win in a row. They are 3-1 after four games and placed at second spot in National Football Conference (NFC) North.
On the other hand, Cowboys are 2-2 and placed at second spot in NFC East.
Bears will face Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5 game, while Cowboys will have bye week.
