Tony Romo won't require surgery
Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo has been told that he will not require surgery to repair his broken collarbone, and that time is all that is required to allow the bone to heal properly.
Romo, who was injured in last Monday's game against the New York Giants, is expected to miss up to eight weeks because of the injury.
Who knows what kind of position the Cowboys will be in by the time their Pro Bowl quarterback is ready to return, but with their record currently at 1-5, the outlook is pretty bleak. With the injury to Romo setting the team back further, many are suggesting
that the Cowboys hopes of making the play-offs are over.
"We're not going to stop right now and give up or quit or whine or even make excuses," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday, 26 October. "You've just got to go forward. That's what we have to do. I think our guys will band together."
Romo broke his collarbone when he was flattened by Giants linebacker Michael Boley after rookie fullback Chris Gronkowski missed his blocking assignment.
"We just made a mistake," Phillips said. "It certainly was unfortunate for Tony. It was a base thing that we've run since training camp. That was the discouraging thing. ... (Romo) just fell the wrong way. He's been hit before, but this time it was more
serious."
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been clear about the fact that he has coach Wade Phillips' back, and that the injury to Romo has not affected his views of the team's coach.
"Romo getting hurt doesn't affect the way I feel about Wade."
The Cowboys will now look to 14-year veteran John Kitna to help lead the team and Phillips is confident the 38-year-old is up to the challenge.
"I think he'll do a good job," Phillips said. "That's why we got him – in case things like this happen."
