Tony Sparano fills in for vacant New York Jets’ OC slot – NFL News Update
The Jets have decided to hurl in Tony Sparano as the replacement for the vacant offensive coordinator position.
The Jets have had a hectic week. Changes and shocks have hit the team ever since Coach Rex Ryan failed to live up to his claims of making it to the Super Bowl. Coaches have been parting ways and the team has been facing with mounting
criticism from fans.
Now, taking a new turn, Jets' players started taking strides at the Quarterback, Mark Sanchez, seriously questioning his ability to lead the team to a Super Bowl, and some even calling for him to be replaced with Peyton Manning.
The New York Daily News quoted a player calling Sanchez “lazy and content”, though recently some other players came to the quarterback’s rescue and defended him in the media.
"Whoever said all that, they're out of their minds and just tripping," defensive lineman Marcus Dixon said. "You can't blame a season on one guy.”
While all this has been going on, one of the major shocks that the Jets were hit with was that their Offensive Coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer left the team never to return for another season.
The coordinator had already been under a lot of fire from fans for failing to deliver and improve the offensive line of the team. There were even calls to fire him from the job. So, when he decided to leave most of the fans seemed
pleased to see him go.
Schottenheimer still had two years left with the Jets according to the contract but he decided to make an exit. And the offensive coordinator slot could remain vacant for just 12 hours as the Jets quickly moved to hurl in a replacement
for Schottenheimer.
Schottenheimer had spent six years with the Jets but all of a sudden decided to leave his former team in a hurry.
The Jets chose to have the sacked head coach of Miami Dolphins instead. Sparano had been fired as the head coach after the Dolphins saw their chances of reaching the playoffs ended. The decision came when they were left with just
three games this season.
Sparano spent three seasons with the Dolphins and ended his stay with a 29-32 record.
Among the many challenges that Sparano faces, one is helping Sanchez getting back on track. The 50-year-old coach is also faced with an offense that landed at the 25th position in NFL and surely needs a lot of improvement.
“When we sat down with Tony, I knew that he was the right person at the right time for our offense. I’ve admired his work as a competitor in the division for the past three seasons. His teams were always physical, tough and hard-nosed.”
Ryan said.
The new job may not turn out to be an easy one and Sparano needs to do a lot to recover the credibility that he lost after being fired by the Dolphins.
