Tony Sparano resolves to improve New York Jets’ offense – NFL News Update
New offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, Tony Sparano, has expressed his resolve to improve Jets' attacking ability by making it “explosive” after having impressed general manager, Mike Tannenbaum, owner, Woody Johnson, and the coach, Rex Ryan.
Ryan was the first one to be impressed, reflective of his interview.
“It was like, ‘Wow!’ I was blown away. This is the guy I wanted”, Ryan said on Friday after hearing out the ideas that Sparano had on improving the team’s offence.
Tannenbaum stated that Sparano will help quarterback, Mark Sanchez, get back on track.
Sanchez has come under a lot of heat lately for having failed to come up with a performance that many were expecting of him.
Sparano is intent on helping Sanchez overcome the shortcomings.
Though Sparano admitted that preparing Sanchez had always been a difficult task, he also noted that the player had a lot of qualities.
“We’ll be able to help Mark in a lot of ways”, Sparano said. “Once he gets in here, we’ll through some of the basics and fundamentals at the position and go from there”.
Sparano has been able to develop quarterbacks in the past. Tony Romo in Dallas and Chad Henne in Miami are two examples
Sparano was fired as the head coach of Miami Dolphins after his team failed to make it to the playoffs and was hired just 12 hours later as the offensive coordinator slot became vacant.
He spent three years with the Dolphins with a track record of 29-32.
Apart from the challenge to get Sanchez back on track, the 50-year-old coach needs to improve an offence that ranks 25th overall in the National Football League (NFL).
Ryan seemed pretty confident that Sparano will root out the problem.
“We hired Tony because of what he brings to the table”, Ryan said.
“Tony is a guy I have extreme confidence in. I have complete confidence in Tony”.
It is also rumoured that Sparano will be given full authority to exercise his management and control of the team.
The new offensive coordinator appeared least concerned about the environment in the locker room, preferring to focus more on the problems that the team faced.
Sparano was hired as a replacement for the former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, who left the team saying he would not return this season.
Schottenheimer was coming under a lot of fire as the team’s offence had failed to deliver this season, becoming the main reason why they were wiped off from the playoff contention.
There were even calls by angry fans to fire him. It could be possible that the loads of criticism were one reason why Schottenheimer decided to leave the team.
Schottenheimer had two years remaining in his contract and had served the Jets for six years.
Sparano had his credibility seriously questioned after being fired and now he has a chance to prove his worth again, this time with the New York Jets.
