Tony Stewart: We have to survive at Dover International Speedway – NASCAR news
Tony Stewart does not fancy his chances at the AAA 400 at the Dover International Speedway and said that the team has recently struggled at that track.
Stewart has a mixed record at Dover. He finished 2nd here in his first ever race and until 2004, he had only finished once outside of the top 10, winning two races in the process. However, after 2004, he has not won at the track
and has only finished four times in the top 10 in 13 starts.
In the FedEx 400 held at Dover earlier in 2011, Stewart finished in 29th position. Another performance like that could destroy his championship chances and Stewart is wary of that fact.
Stewart knows the importance of performing even when one is not at his favourite track or the car is not the best in the pack.
“You’re not going to have 10 perfect days. You’re going to have at least one day that’s going to be a little more challenging than the rest,” said Stewart. “It’s the team that can overcome that and rebound and make the most of it that’s going to salvage
that day. It can be the difference between two or three spots at the end of the Chase.”
Stewart once again dodged the question of him being a championship contender and said that they have had a great run but they still have a tough task in the next 8 weeks. He just wants to continue with his philosophy of taking one race at a time and not
think too far ahead.
Stewart also waved off suggestions that winning the last two races have given him the momentum to go on and win the Cup.
“When you talk about momentum, that race car doesn’t know anything about momentum. It knows what you put in it and it knows how we drive it, but it doesn’t know stats. It doesn’t know anything other than just what’s in it,” Stewart said.
Stewart acknowledged that the team had a huge role in his success and the way they kept rallying around each other was the reason that they had made such an extraordinary comeback in the season.
He praised teammate Ryan Newman and his crew as well for helping his team and was hopeful that working together will lead them to victory this season.
